A Modern Guide To Formless Growth: Democratic Educational Space Critically Transforming Chicago’s Monumental Public Art
Do older sculptures teach new lessons, or are they just archaic monuments at busy intersections? Chicago’s 2012 Cultural Plan suggested that educators use local art as a means of education. In my project, I explore how educators may utilize the democratic educational space in their local neighborhoods as “critical,” thereby transcending purely “monumental” aspects of public art. In a series of interviews, I analyze how the community engages with these historical works of art, encouraging the public to interact and interpret art, asking them how they believe the art may best be used as an effective, critical means of education.
