My Style: Looking at the Angles

Because I wanted to engage in conversation with my research participants, my interview approach was highly informal. William Zinsser (2006) noted interviewing “is instinct—knowing how to make the other person relax, when to push, when to listen, when to stop” (p. 104). Although he encouraged interviewers to have a list of specific questions, he added, people “will veer off at an angle you couldn’t have foreseen” (ibid, p. 105). I looked forward to those angles because they produced the most interesting discussion regarding art as well as the public spaces we shared.
