Pop-Up Architecture: Accordion Fold

Grade level: Late Elementary - 4

Timeline: 6 Class Periods - 35min

Artist in Focus: Friedensreich Hundertwasser

Big Idea: Architecture Spaces

Students will identify architecture spaces through contemporary artist & architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser.  In this lesson students will examine innovative uses of paper, including architectural forms used by artists Ingrid Siliakus and Gerry Stormer.  Students will design a dream architectural space using pop-up structures within an accordion fold.  To start, students will consider ways to use varying cutout line to form shapes.   Students will further their architectural design using complementary color and pen to convey stories and personify their space.

Objectives:

1. Students will construct an architectural design from paper using elements of space, principles of color and rhythm 25.A.2d

2. Students will develop paper fabrication techniques and apply them in designing a dream architectural space 26.B.1d

3. Students will build architecture spaces that convey personal imaginations by examining contemporary architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser 27.B.1

State Goals:

25.A.2d Visual Arts: Identify and describe the elements of 2- and 3-dimentional space, figure ground, value and form; the principles of rhythm, size, proportion and compositions; and the expressive qualities of symbol and story.

26.B.1d Visual Arts: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create visual works or art using manipulation, hand-eye coordination, building and imagination.

27.B.1: Know how images, sounds, and movements convey stories about people, place and times.

Steps:

-Work Session One:

  1. Open a power point; students will look at the work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser, paper architecture artists and pop-up books. (Attached – annotated images)
  2. After the presentation, draw students around rug to read Clancy and Millie: and the very fine dwelling.

-Work Session Two:

  1. Gather students around demo area and introduce Accordion Fold process. (Attached – illustrated steps #1)
  2. Pass out paper; students begin accordion fold.
  3. In front of class demonstrate how different angle cuts in the paper result in different pop-up forms (Attached – illustrated steps #2)

-Work Session Three:

  1. Demo pop-up building design #2 (back side of illustrated steps)
  2. Pass out papers for second design.

-Work Session Four:

  1. With pen, draw architectural elements onto pop-up aspects of paper on building #1.
  2. With markers, use complementary colors on pop-up aspects of paper on building design #2.

-Work Session Five:

  1. Using all previous techniques the students will design a final, two-layered architecture pop-up book.  Students will begin working on the first layer.

-Work Session Six:

  1. Work on the second layer of final piece.
  2. Details can be added with pen or markers.
  3. The two layers will be glued together.

-Work Session Seven:

  1. Presentation and Reflection.

Materials:

-       12x18 vibrant color sheets (2per student)   - 9x12 White Paper (2per student)

-       Scissors                                                           - Popsicle Sticks

-       Markers                                                                      - Black Pen

Motivational Prior Knowledge:

The students will recall some traditional geometric shapes that they previously learned and they will build on their knowledge of what shapes be and represent.

Vocabulary:

Accordion Fold: Bookmaking technique that forms a zig-zag shape.

Pop-Up Book: a book that contains a three-dimensional structure that rises when a page is opened

Space: area used for a particular purpose, including foreground, background and middle ground.

Architecture: art of designing and constructing buildings (specific styles, periods, cultures)
