MAT Thesis

The MAT culminates in a master’s thesis that offers an excellent opportunity for students to develop a matrix of connections between personal interests and experiences, professional development and praxis, discursive and performative practices, and historical and contemporary scholarship. In ARTED 5290 Thesis 1, MAT students write a detailed thesis proposal. In the proposal, students introduce their topic and research questions, review relevant literature in the field, design a research methodology and curriculum outline, and identify the parameters of their study. MAT students carry out their field research in an elementary or secondary school during ARTED 4490 Apprentice Teaching. Drawing upon their research interests and working closely with faculty and their co-operating teacher/mentor, students design and implement their own lesson plans. MAT students are encouraged to explore innovative approaches to research and documentation, including participatory and action research, interactive and collaborative projects, and new media-based presentations. Faculty advisors mentor students intensively throughout the process. In their final semester, MAT students present their thesis in a review meeting with their faculty panel, and at the annual George Roeder Art Education Graduation Symposium.
