Home Grown Goodness: Family Recipe

July 29, 2013

Kearney, NE

Originally serving as a post along the Oregon, Mormon and California Trails, Kearney, Nebraska, also functioned as a stop along the Pony Express. The city is also home to the first Nebraska Teacher’s College, founded in 1904. Since the school, now known as University of Nebraska-Kearney, was dedicated to training teachers, it boasted an all-female enrollment.

The school continues to function as a training ground for educators, and one faculty member described the education department as a “home-grown program,” a theme found in other nearby local businesses, including The Bike Shed, conveniently located near my trip route, Highway 30, and Jake & Luke’s BBQ, located adjacent to UNK campus.
