Debemos Ser
This 24” x 36” acrylic is a collage celebrating the impressions the artist received after viewing the 2012 “Dia de Muertos” exhibit in Chicago.
The background is executed in bright hues, evocative of the holiday’s associative flower, the marigold. The red frill surrounding the central figure is reminiscent of the hybrid the artist planted each year in the memorial garden honoring her deceased friends and relatives she had created while residing in Southeastern Colorado. The petals of the marigolds surround the eagle which led the Aztec Civilization to what was to be their homeland. The wooden mask is derivative of the ceramic Mictlantecuhtli now on display in Mexico City. Each of the skulls represents a close friend or family member of the artist whose souls have passed on to Mictlan.
